Polly Hewett - Biography

Polly is a trained singer, cellist, pianist, composer, conductor & vocal coach.

She regularly performs as a jazz vocalist, a cocktail pianist and as classical cellist.

 


After training at  Middlesex Uniiversity (Trent Park) and obtaining a degree in Performance Arts (BAPA Honours), Polly appeared with various pop bands as a songwriter and keyboard player, gigging in London and the South-East. She also performed as a cellist with contemporary music group 'Collective Title', and with Edwardian Parlour Music Duo 'The Blue Stocking Belles' and also as a composer for music for fringe theatre.

Polly co-owned a music pre-production studio where she produced demos for budding singer songwriters, arranging & recording songs and singing lead and backing vocals.
In the early 1990's she secured a production deal as a solo singer songwriter with Mark 'Spike' Stent, who has produced Madonna & The Spice Girls, and she appeared on Top of the Pops in 1996.

Having gained confidence as a solo singer in the pop world, Polly started singing jazz with jazz duo 'Red Hot and Blue', performing in jazz clubs in Soho. She now sings with '2 blue' 2bluejazz.co.uk at restaurants & jazz venues such The Foyer - National Theatre, Smolenskys On the Strand, and Bush Hall (West London).

Having gained a wealth of experience as a singer and performer, in 1996 Polly decided to share her knowledge & enthusiasm with private singing students and formed Sing Your Heart Out.

She also took up the post of Choral Director at The Centre for Young Musicians, Kensington & Chelsea, who regularly commission her to compose songs and projects for the children. In 2005 she conducted 170 children from all the Centres' for Young Musicians at The Royal Festival Hall. She has also conducted choirs of 270 children for Lambeth Music Service at The Purcell Room and The Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Polly has worked extensively as a composer and musical director in theatre and radio link pollyhewett.co.uk for BBC Radio 4, Radio 3 and The World Service, as well as composing for TV. Her vocal coaching extends not only to singers but also to actors who need help with creating accents or vocalising characters. She also coaches professional business people in diction and public speaking.

Polly has worked as an actress and voice-over artist, and in 2005 she recorded a series of Call Tones for Orange (available to down-load via the Internet).
